《两个汤匙一个碗》 (Trial Version) Photoshoot: I

By now, I guess some readers should have seen the photos which I have posted up on Facebook. Either the shots are very lousy, people arent using Facebook very much (which I doubt), I dont have much friends in my list, or they simply couldnt be bothered with some inputs or comments.

《两个汤匙一个碗》
is a photoshoot which is born from my own concept of a couple who has just broken up with each other.

When loosely translated into English, the photoshoot title means
" 2 spoons and a bowl "
.

Why do I call it 《两个汤匙一个碗》?
Well, this was mainly because I was listening to one of my favourite female singer this day, and it was like the "me-time" for me, whereby I just lay back on my bed, and rev up the emotional love songs in my media player.

I was inspired by the lyrics (as usual), about this couple who used to share a bowl of dessert at their favourite cafe during their time together. They place they were in had 4 seasons (sadly for me of cuz). Apparently, they later broke up and the female singer was still thinking about what could have, should have, would have be if they are still together at this point in time.

This photoshoot concept targets the individual male and female aspects of how they deal with their respective break-ups and shows the emotional side of them, regardless of whether are they still reminiscing about their happy past, or thinking about their current sad predicament.

Currently, this is my very first trial version of how I'm gonna create a story based on the idea for 《两个汤匙一个碗》. And there is only the female version of it, in which Gladys is being featured.

We went for a shooting trip together one day, shoot around and just chillax. Found a quiet spot at the Barrage, sat down and talk about our styles of shooting and techniques etc. So I just brought up this concept of mine, and shared the idea with her, hoping that it could sell off. Well, it did and she was interested! And of cuz, I'm now still refining what photos, the locations, timings, and feelings that could be put in in future photoshoots with regards to this conceptual idea.

Still searching for potential models, guys & girls respectively, single or taken also can!
Of cuz taken interested personnel do need to seek permission from their respective partner, if not ahem, others may have the wrong idea about this whole thing. And hopefully, I can come out of the deal with my reputation (the good one) intact, if not better!

Helpers anyone?
:)

Location: Marina Barrage & The Helix
Model: Gladys Ng
Photographer: Yong Jun
Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: Nikkor 18-105mm zoom/wide angle lens; 50mm prime lens

Here we go!
Some 20++ shots~
Anyways, if you notice, they will be in sequential order
Story-line style
Showing off emotional sides of happiness and sadness from time to time

The first 3 shots would be on the girl who is interested in photography, and she was on her usual photo hunt
Which leads her to this place of Marina Barrage
Chilling out and just getting in some shots here and there

Fresh memories of her break-up still hunt her....

Actually I personally love this shot a lot.
The 朦胧 look on her face.
Where the wind blows her hair into the face, covering large parts of the face, and most importantly, the eyes.
With only one eye being slightly obvious and the wild hairdo, it gives viewers this feel of hurt within, and yet the I'm-hurt-but-I-still-need-care-&-concern emotion.
Especially so as it is being done in black and white.

These 3 shots were like after she got up from the place where she was sitting, the emotions within the soul were kinda boiling over already. Especially so in the 3rd shot, whereby the hand covering the face, and the lost look on the face, almost as if she was choking on tears, but still slightly holding all back in....

Personally I like this shot too
With the pretty Singapore skyline behind, being blurred out due to the bokeh magic of the 50mm prime lens
(now thats why I splashed a bomb out for the new lens man!!!)
In addition, the sunset colours give the background a very nice warming feel, and of cuz the sunset rays exponentially highlighting the red colour hair on her, part bright-red, part dark-red

This photo is inspired by Gladys
She mentioned about how the sun rays can help in the picture. Thus I tried and got this shot in which the sun rays reflect nicely in a circular manner, 50% opacity that kinda feel too.
Throw in 2 towers of the MBS for extra brownie points too!
This photo shows the joyful side of the girl finding happiness in the things she loves the most, which is taking beautiful pictures.

A lovely shot here
The facial expression was very natural, showing that actually the model was quite comfortable with the photo-taking session.
This often leads to good photos as the photographer has managed to build a rapport with his subject

I realised I have little or none top-down photos too! And now I see that this kinda top-down photos do look good actually! Wanted to rotate it to give a different feel, up till now, I still wonder why I never do it.....

Seriously, this is another personal favourite.
Bringing back old-school FTW!
The classic shot-in-a-shot photo!

Gladys was saying that they often do it using the compacts, and now with the DSLR, this looks more awesome in fact!
And truth be told, it was a lucky snap, with a lucky focus on the camera viewfinder
Why do I say so?
Because if you look carefully, the photo is actually focus on the camera and the shot she took, thus blurring out the background and the subject with the bokeh magic!
Damn! Love is the lens!
You can check out her profile pic in FB, it is the exact same photo if I'm not wrong
:)

Another B&W classic!
Yet again the 朦胧 look, this time the curtain (aka the fringe) covering the outermost eye, while the hand is covering the other eye
Making a powerful statement showing that the phonecall is like yet another insurance type of nuisance call. The feel of getting trapped by the phonecall, cant hang up and still need to carry on the conversation.
B&W truly brings out the feel within

Balls of fire
With the crimson red sunset bearing down
It highlights the whole red head hairdo.
Maximum colours here

I kinda got this idea from some Jolin's MTV or something
Like maybe Agent J, or Agent G here
Giving the gunshot photo, and the impromptu plus model-self-improvised delightful look of making of handsign showing the birds soaring towards the fast fading sunset
Done with the model's face being darkened out to highlight the contrasting effect of the sunset and the building silhouette.

We also discussed other aspects of my photoshoot concept, and I thought of this shot of the couple arguing picture
This almost (nearly, around 90-95% already) got the feel
Something I'm searching for, but still not the perfect photo
Shows that I'm kinda lecturing Gladys, pushing the blame onto her, but she on her part is keeping mum about the whole issue, clamming up and shutting everything out...
The darkened facial features, and the contrasting
black and white outfit from both of us
Adds points to this photo I feel

Didnt post this photo onto Facebook
Didnt want to cause ppl's tongue to wag also
There will confirm be the Army friends like making funny remarks on the album
Spoiling the entire thing
Better not test the market there

But this is the sort of photo I want to portray
With 2 persons of cuz, to suit my concept of this
" 2 spoons 1 bowl "
photoshoot
Thank God for the tripod, and 太阳公公 was seriously getting impatient
Setting so fast when we were getting into the groove of throwing up more ideas
Can try to implement this kinda couple shot more for my next try
:)

The Helix was more of a see-the-photographer's-feeling place for me already.
Thought these would be the better portraits that I can showcase
Like the 3rd one, got this music album kinda feeling
Sorta resembling Tanya Chua in her music album covers
No wonder plenty of ppl like how she can make listeners feel
“ 她可以唱出女孩子的痛 ” with her soulful voice
That's what I hope I captured there in the 3rd shot

And the last photo of the day!
Thought there was still a tinge of sadness being expressed on Gladys's face
Using a slanted angle and the Fullerton as a backdrop
The blurred yet colourful lighting, and the reflections on the Singapore river
.......+++ points!
;)

And that's all for my first try with the new lens, new concepts!
Good harvest as mentioned by Gladys
We got plenty of new display pictures everytime we come out and shoot
*double thumbs up*
=D

Well, learnt a lot from each other I guess?
More of techniques from her, and concepts from me?
Haha!

During the times whereby we sit down and just share ideas
I realised that revisting a place at different times
is a very good idea
So it doesnt do any harm for me to go back
to the Barrage that day
(my 1st time there was midnight with a Canon EOS 500D)
And it isnt so inaccessible as thought!
Kudos to Zhiwen for directions to the Helix too!

Been reading books on photog and put what I read into practice
And yes, portrait is still the hardest to take
Learning how to work with the subject has to be
the first major step
Making the subject comfortable with your photography style
And getting the subject to pose up several pose as required
Is a very difficult job
Sometimes I do oversnap, just becuz DSLR is digital and not film
But luckily I did hold back this time
And getting the exact feel for the first shot is like
striking the lottery
You know it when you review the picture and you smile to yourself
It's the one you want....
That's how I feel for majority of the shots

And yes, ALL the pictures are edited
I repeat ALL are edited
And if you think major editing is done, think again!
Each picture only takes 60sec-2mins to do up
Very smooth and fast procedure once I know what I want
Of cuz there's help from the expert on Photoshop
Plus tutorials from books and trial-and-error FTW!

I used to think that think editing photos is wrong
But then I read this line from a photog book publisher
She mentioned something like.....

" Editing photos is a major skill every photographer must know
It's like drawing and art&crafts
Everyone can draw and do art&crafts, but we need to add our own element of idea and design into our piece of work
Its becuz reality can only offer so much "

Totally agree with her
And that's why I think singers who do covers
and renditions of songs
Put in a little personal flavour and character into the songs
Will definitely blow the audience away with
their individual performance
=D

Here's a song for you
David 陶喆 - 太美丽
Enjoy
Because I'm starting to think of you again
